Telmex prepaid cards are usually cheaper than using your cell phone.
Don’t forget to call your bank to advise you will be using it in Mexico, so they don’t think it has been stolen! The closest ATM is at HSBC, on Juarez Avenue between 10th and 15th (only pesos). To get US Dollars you can go to Scotiabank, on Constituyentes and 10th Avenue.
Most places accept US Dollars, but ask for the rate each time! You can exchange money in a lot of places along the 5th avenue (signs that read “CAMBIO”), however if you have time, you will get a much better rate at the bank or if you withdraw from the ATM. Note that it is better to exchange money in Playa del Carmen than in Cancun airport.
